Fraction 3-part Cards for Elementary Math
A few years ago, I made these felt fraction circles (free pattern) for our homeschooling. At the time, the kids were ready to just play with the concept of fractions and their equivalencies. Now, they're ready to actually name them and start adding them. My goal is for fractions to be not as frightening to them as they were to me.
The Montessori idea of 3-part cards is very helpful for introducing names of things. Children are shown the cards in their completeness, with the label attached to the picture. For these fraction cards, kids can match the felt pieces (or the store-bought version) to the picture on the card and read the label to understand the name.
After the children have mastered the fraction names, the parent/teacher can cut the labels off the picture cards. Kids can match the label back to the picture or to the felt pieces.
Eventually, the child will be able to add pieces together to make same-denominator fractions and mixed fractions. As children move on to more complicated math concepts, the hands-on learning will stick with them and help them solve the harder problems.

Print the labels, cut them out, and laminate them for durability. Present them to your children from the simplest fraction to the one with the most pieces. Have them compare fractions by asking them "Would you Rather" questions involving foods they love. When they master fractions, have a pie party to celebrate.
